The National Museum of Australia is located in the capital, Canberra, in the suburb of Ecton.
It contains items relating to 50,000 years of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture, Australia's own history since 1788 and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
It contains the world's largest collection of Aboriginal drawings on tree bark and stone tools, the heart of the Far Lap racehorse and the prototype of Australia's first car.
There are five permanent exhibitions: the Early Australians Gallery, Intertwined Fates, Settling Australia, Australian Symbols, and Forever: Stories from the Heart of Australia.
The building of the National Museum was opened on March 11, 2001, as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Australian Federation.
But the very idea of creating a museum appeared in the early 20th century, but its realization was hindered by two world wars and financial crises.
Only in 1980 the Australian parliament issued a special decree about the creation of the museum and collection work began.
In 2005 and 2006, the National Museum was named Australia's top tourist attraction.
The total area of the museum building, built in the postmodern style, is 6600 m?
