In 1974 the Queensland Australian government decided to merge the existing Picture Gallery, Queensland Museum, Queensland Library and Theatre Arts Centre into one museum complex. Thus the Queensland Cultural Centre was born, which is located in the city's Central Business District near Brisbane's popular hotels.
In 1972, the Queensland Art Gallery was built in South Bank. Covering 4,700 square metres, it's one of Australia's largest galleries. It hosts permanent exhibitions of world-famous artists such as Renoir, Van Gogh and Picasso, as well as numerous temporary exhibitions of contemporary artists and sculptors.
The Art Gallery includes a separate Contemporary Art Gallery, a neo-constructivist building near the William Jolly Bridge.
Here you can see the work of local artists, including Indigenous arts and crafts. There's also an exhibition of artists from Asia and Oceania.

It includes Queensland's oldest Cremorne theater. This theater was founded as early as 1911, but burned down in a fire in 1954.As the theater was a favourite meeting place for the citizens of Queensland and also gave birth to many talented actors, artists and directors, it was decided to rebuild it and incorporate it into the Queensland Cultural Centre.
The Queensland Museum was opened in 1986 in South Bank, after changing many of its residences throughout the state. The museum has a total area of about 6,500 sq. ft.
